Microsoft MCSA: Windows Server 2012 FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What's the underlying technology for the Microsoft MCSA: Windows Server 2012?

The underlying technology on the Microsoft MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certification was Windows Server 2012 itself. The certifying exams for the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 (70-410, 70-411, 70-412) thoroughly tested a server administrator's knowledge of the Windows Server 2012 software itself -- everything from installing and configuring servers, to configuring High Availability, deploying core network services, managing Active Directory and much more. All the MCSA certifications proved deep knowledge of single pieces of software over broad job knowledge.

Are Microsoft certification exams 70-410, 70-411, and 70-412 retired?

Yes, all of the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certifying exams (70-410, 70-411, and 70-412) are retired. Microsoft retired 70-410, 70-411, and 70-412 on January 31, 2021, which is around the same time they retired the entire MCSA series. The 2021 retirement of the three certifying exams wasn't like the normal cycle of rotating the material on old exams -- you can no longer take 70-410, 70-411, or 70-412, and there is no alternative.

Is the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 still valid?

No, Microsoft retired the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 and it is no longer valid. If you earned the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 before January 31, 2021, it may still appear on your transcript as a certification you've previously held, but it is no longer possible to earn the certificate or take any of its three certifying exams.

What certification did Microsoft replace MCSA: Windows Server 2012 with?

There is no replacement certification for the MCSA: Windows Server 2012. When Microsoft retired the MCSA: Windows Server 2012, they did away with the entire MCSA series. The MCSA certification series was retired because it had focused too narrowly on deep knowledge of specific software, rather than job roles and responsibilities. The Microsoft 365 Certified series is the closest thing to a replacement the MCSA certifications got.

Is this MCSA: Windows Server 2012 training still valuable?

Yes, for administrators who need to understand the workings of Windows Server 2012, this MCSA: Windows Server 2012 training is definitely still valuable. You can no longer take 70-410, 70-411, and 70-412, the certifying exams this training was originally designed to prepare you for. But that doesn't mean the deep familiarity with all of Windows Server 2012's features and tools isn't still valuable for server administrators.
