Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Networking (70-741) FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What's the underlying technology tested on the 70-741?

The 70-741 is a retired certifying exam that tested skills and knowledge related specifically to Windows Server 2016 administration. The 70-741 tested configuring networking features like DNS and DHCP, implementing network connectivity, configure routing, and deploying remote access solutions like VPN and RADIUS. Although the routing and networking skills were largely universal, before it was retired, the 70-741 specifically covered implementing and configuring those features within Windows Server 2016.

Is the Windows Server 2016 Networking (70-741) exam retired?

Yes, the Microsoft exam 70-741 is retired. As of January 31, 2021, the 70-741 is retired and it's no longer possible to take it. Not only is the 70-741 retired, but there is no replacement exam. As a part of their stated efforts to keep their certification program in line with industry and hiring trends, Microsoft is focusing on role-based certifications and moving away from features in any particular version.

Is the Microsoft MCSA: Windows Server 2016 certification still valid?

No, the MCSA: Windows Server 2016 is no longer a valid certification. The 70-741 was one of three exams necessary to earn the MCSA: Windows Server 2016 -- all three were retired around the same time that the certification was retired. If you earned the MCSA: Windows Server 2016 before the retirement date, the certification should remain on your transcript, but you won't be able to renew it.

What test or certification replaced MCSA: Windows Server 2016 and 70-741?

There's no one-to-one replacement test or certification for the MCSA: Windows Server 2016 or any of its three tests. When Microsoft retired the MCSA and 70-741, they moved their certification program toward role-based certifications. That means that rather than focus on all aspects of one piece of software, Microsoft's certifications will now focus on someone's job responsibilities. To find the certification that matches what you need, you should browse Microsoft's certifications and exams.

Is this Windows Server 2016 Networking (70-741) training still valuable?

Yes, for administrators who need to configure or troubleshoot the networking features that Microsoft Server 2016 relies on, this Windows Server 2016 Networking (70-741) is extremely valuable. Plenty of companies use only Windows Server 2016, and with this training you can master the software package and know all its features and tools that aren't available in other versions.
