balise {{PD-retouched-user}}

Bonjour Yann,

@Christian28TMA: Bonjour,
Je ne suis pas du tout un spécialiste des insignes militaires. Il vaudrait mieux demander sur le COM:Bistro ou sur COM:VPC. Cordialement, Yann (talk) 10:55, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question

Hello! I have already realized my mistakes, I will try to avoid them in the future. I have put files that violate the rules up for quick deletion, please check other files and, if possible, write to me so that I can delete them myself, thank you. Deleting files (need help)

Hello!

I uploaded files by mistake.

I corrected the description but for some reason they do not appear on the deletion page: Commons:Deletion requests/2024/02/14. This is not my files. Author unknown. License unknown. Please help me delete these files:

LibreOffice User (talk) 11:10, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

✓ Done Your deletion request was malformed. In the future, just add {{SD|G7}} in the file description. Yann (talk) 12:16, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redirect

Hi, Yann - I think this redirect should be deleted. Redirecting a non-existent file named Castner Glacier.jpg to Gulkana Glacier.jpg makes no sense at first glance. The image I uploaded and incorrectly named Castner is now correctly named Gulkana. I have gone through and corrected/updated all incidents where it was used which only amounted to 2 or 3 times. I'm thinking that redirect was probably auto-added when the File was moved to the correct name. Also, having Castner redirect to Gulkana creates issues for others wanting to upload an image simply named File:Castner Glacier.jpg. Atsme Talk 📧 12:41, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion of videos by Disney Channel Israel

Hey, Yann. Disney has notified WMF Legal that the YouTube channel for Disney Channel Israel was engaging in license laundering:

Wikimedia Foundation's legal department contacted Disney's legal team as well and made them aware of the CC licenses that were present in their videos in Disney Channel Israel. They answered to our email confirming that the channel's content referred to is not offered under a Creative Commons license. In this sense, we just wanted to reaffirm the position that the CC-license attribution on their part is likely not intentional and cannot be interpreted as a free choice to license the videos.

Due to this, I have nominated the three videos from Disney Channel Israel which you uploaded for speedy deletion (File:הבית של רייבן -חופשה באירופה - Raven's Home.webm, File:הסודות של סאלפר ספרינגס - תחרות כשרונות - Secrets of Sulphur Springs.webm and File:קיקיוואקה- המחנה החדש - קן לציפור - Bunk'd- Learning the Ropes.webm) and have also added Disney Channel Israel to a list of questionable YouTube sources.

Please let me know if you have any questions. JohnCWiesenthal (talk) 15:37, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@LRGoncalves-WMF and JohnCWiesenthal: Thanks for your message. At least the situation is clearer now. Yann (talk) 15:41, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hey, Yann. Apart from the dimensions and quality, there seems to be no difference between File:Luxor Temple, The Colonnade of Amenhotep III, Luxor, Egypt.jpg and File:Luxor temple at night 2007.jpg, don't you think? 0x0a (talk) 12:03, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

✓ Done Ah yes right. I thought it was about a third file, which I had already deleted. Yann (talk) 12:08, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Oct 31, 1973 (Today Series, Tuesday) On Kawara.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Evolution of Hindu-Arabic numerals.jpg

Hi Yann,

I have been trying to add further context to File:Evolution of Hindu-Arabic numerals.jpg, since when I previously added a credit there I didn't know the proximate source of the scan. It's apparently a (1984) book chapter by Frank Swetz from a book by Campbell and Higgins. (Swetz modified Karl Menninger's original diagram by adding the "Shang numerals" box at the top). For no apparent reason, user:M.Bitton doesn't want this source to be linked, and keeps edit warring at the image description page. Do you mind adding the link(s)? Thanks! jacobolus (t · wp · wt) 16:44, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Actually, I mentioned the reason: "it was edited by an admin" (after you messed with it). In any case, now that you brought it here, the admin will decide what to do and in the meantime, I will create a derivative that will be based on all the cited sources. Can I upload a logo from Canva that I have created under the "self|cc-by-sa-4.0" license that will not be deleted?

Can I upload a logo from Canva that I have created under the {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} license that will not be deleted? Dhampius (talk) 19:04, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Dhampius: Hi,
I suppose you are talking about File:ЕХФЛ.png? Why did you make for? Do you work for this organization? Yann (talk) 19:10, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, thank you for answering. I work for the organization. We used Canva, but maybe we have chosen the wrong public license. Please, could restore the images and tell me which public license is the most suitable. We do not want to own the logo or to keep it private any public license will be ok? Dhampius (talk) 19:22, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dhampius: Well, then a formal written permission from the organization is needed. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:24, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am a volunteer and this is a non-profit organization. Can`t we just restore the image and change it with a suitable license?
If that is not possible, may I create an image with just text, if this can be approved, which license should I use so it does not get deleted?
Thanks in advance for the time and attention. Dhampius (talk) 19:28, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I undeleted the file, and created a regular DR instead. Yann (talk) 19:35, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! I saw that my other picture is also deleted ЕлеазарХараш2023.jpg, could you please also restore it so I can set it with a free license?
Currently the license for ЕХФЛ.png is "{self|cc-zero}", should I keep it like this or set it to: "{cc-zero}" or "{cc-by-sa-4.0}" , I want to set it to the most free license possible. Dhampius (talk) 20:01, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The issue is not the license, but who is the copyright holder, and is the file in scope?
And the issue is the same for your other files. You can request undeletion on COM:UDR, but I doubt they will be undeleted. Yann (talk) 21:59, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Louzbek5097 (talk) 15:09, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Louzbek5097: Bonjour,
Le photographe est apparemment Jean-Christophe Bott. Il faut donc qu'il confirme la licence via COM:VRT/fr. Yann (talk) 15:16, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Merci! Louzbek5097 (talk) 15:21, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please don't block me

I am sincerely sorry if any of my edits seemed to you like vandalism. But the truth is, yesterday I was extremely stressed and I don't want that happening to me today. Blocking me will only worsen my current situation, and now I am scared to make another edit after that warning. I hope that warning is temporary because if it stays on my record, I might have to quit Wikimedia Commons, forever... TheKumquatGuy2662 (talk) 15:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Blocking is preventative, it is not punitive. COM:BP Honestly, if you get so stressed from discussing things in a forum, you should know when to walk away from the computer and take a walk outside or something. As long as you avoid behavior like trying to blank out a discussion when things are not going your way, you should be fine. Abzeronow (talk) 17:55, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Does that mean the block warning is temporary or do I have to worry about it for the rest of my life? TheKumquatGuy2662 (talk) 18:25, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TheKumquatGuy2662: If you behave properly, you edit will be understood as one-time mistake, and will be forgotten. Yann (talk) 18:42, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

your opinion please...

User:隐世高人 has a pattern that I thought was disruptive, and counterpolicy.

There is nothing wrong with concluding an existing category has a less than ideal name, and deciding to do somthing about it. But 隐世高人 does the wrong thing, actually, two wrong things.

Best practice is to either (1), apply a {{Move}} template to the category, and explain why one thinks it should be renamed; or (2) initiate a rename discussion at CfD, with an explanation as to why the category should be renamed.

If the best practices are followed, and the new name is endorsed, (1) a robot does the dirty work of moving all the elements, and a (2) {{Category redirect}} is left, so the renaming does not leave a bunch of 404s.

What 隐世高人 does is (1) create their preferred category name, without getting any input from anyone else; (2) use cat-a-lot, one element at a time, to remove the old existing category, and add their new category; then finally (3) apply a {{Speedy}} deletion tag to the old category, on the grounds that it is empty. Yeah, it is empty because they just finished manually emptying it.

One reason this is a highly disruptive practice is that we have no way of knowing how many third parties had bookmarked the external URL of the old category. All those bookmarks break when the old category is deleted.

The other reason this is potentially disruptive is that, in my experience, the individuals who ignore the best practice for renaming categories are prone to pick bad names, inferior to the existing names.

You recently speedy deleted several of the categories 隐世高人 first emptied, out of process, and then requested speedy deletion, because they were empty.

I raised this at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard, a couple of weeks ago, after 隐世高人 employed this tactic to Category:Coast Guard of Yemen. I am going to ping @User:Jeff G. and @User:Andy Dingley, who I think agreed with me there.

Do you concur with us, that 隐世高人 has been engaged in a disruptive activity? If you agree what do you think should be done about cleaning up after their disruption? If you think their activity is okay, could you explain why?

Here is an example:

  1. 隐世高人 moved Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FFG 462) to Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FF 462) ==
  2. removed Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FFG 462) from File:Phutta Loetla Naphalai.jpg and added Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FF 462)
  3. removed Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FFG 462) from File:Aerial_port_side_view_of_the_Royal_Thai_Navy_(RTN)_His_Majestys_Thai_Ship_(HTMS)_PHUTTHALOETLA_NAPHALAI_(462)_underway_in_the_Gulf_of_Thailand_during_Cooperation_Afloat_Readiness_an_-_DPLA_-_52e4be6d61da902bf6ad99c860c41779.jpeg and added Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FF 462)
  4. Added a {{Speedy}} to Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FFG 462) because it was empty
  5. You deleted Category:HTMS Phutthaloetla Naphalai (FFG 462) because it was empty, even though we have no way of knowing how many third parties had bookmarked it.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 21:27, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Geo Swan: I know what's the proper name for this category, but if the name is controversial, a discussion should be started before renaming. Yann (talk) 21:32, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Other instances include:
  1. Category:HTMS_Phutthayotfa_Chulalok_(FFG_461)
  2. Category:Makut Rajakumarn (FF 433) (ship, 1971)
  3. Category:HTMS Taksin (FFG 422)
  4. Category:HTMS Naresuan (FFG 421)
  5. Category:HTMS Rattanakosin (FS 441)
  6. Category:HTMS Matchanu (ship, 1936)
  7. Category:Coast Guard Ships of Yemen
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 21:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Geo Swan: I undeleted the categories, and reverted to the redirects. These are useful anyway. Now a discussion should be started about the definitive names these should have. Yann (talk) 22:15, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
