Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 20:52, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Podzemnik

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Podzemnik,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:54, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow[edit]

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. Ada River (New Zealand)[edit]

Hi Michal, could you please have a look on some of your photographs you have taken on the 28th of June 2016 on St James Walkway? I found your photographs on commons under Category:Ada River (New Zealand). I was going to use one of these photos for an article but I found that the given coordinates are not corresponding with the rivers name. The coordinates are pointing on Boyle River. I would be happy you could have a look and check. Thanks in advance. -- Ulanwp (talk) 17:09, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ulanwp: Hi, yes I think that all photos belong to Ada River. The coordinates have a diameter set for 8,000m (see the source code) which means that the photo was taken somewhere up to 8,000m around the actual coordinates... I used to do it sometimes when I thought that it's better to have some coordinates than none as I used to struggle to pin point where the photo was actually taken.. I don't do it these days anymore and I take my time and actually do the coordinates properly. Regards, --Podzemnik (talk) 21:33, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's fine than. I didn't know about the huge tolerance. Thank's for your response and have a nice day. -- Ulanwp (talk) 07:38, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikipedia files[edit]

I did not understand the reason for having removed my files that I had published in the articles in question. What's wrong? I demand that all my files be returned, because according to the form, I filled it out completely. I hope you're not sending the bot to delete it out because of envy.

--Kacir (talk) 19:34, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Kacir: Zrealizovat by to šlo.
--Michal Bělka (talk) 11:47, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
--Michal Bělka (talk) 11:57, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

;) — Draceane talkcontrib. 19:27, 7 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

S pozdravem, --Podzemnik (talk) 20:20, 7 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Kultura poříčí Indu.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Kia ora Michal, hope all's well with you. We've just made the move to Golden Bay. Yeah. Want to go exploring in Kahurangi? It's exactly 200 m from our house! You've got a base anytime you need it. Anyway, I've just put up everything uploaded by User:Curtistemaari up for deletion as everything is a copyvio. New user; just helped him/herself to anything that was available online. Needs a total cleanout. Schwede66 04:00, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kia ora Schwede66, I'm alright, thanks. Wow that's so cool that you live so close to Kahurangi! Now you can be full time Wikimedian! Yup, we'll come over one day. I've checked the user and deleted everything. In these clear cases there is no need to wait 7 days. All the best Podzemnik (talk) 09:23, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Save the date: Commons Photographers meeting next week[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Please save the date: on Saturday, June 19th, our next virtual Zoom meeting is going to take place. As you know, one goal of these meetings is to share knowledge about different types of photography. This time, we've lined up the following presentations:

  • Photography in Nigeria

[edit]

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

De-adminship warning[edit]

Dear Podzemnik. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2022 before 13 September, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you! -- CptViraj (talk) 18:51, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uh oh. I hope life's treating you well but I sense you are busy with the wee one. Here's a potential admin action for you. User:Prosperosity is appearing a lot on my watchlist and it's been a long time since I had to correct a mistake. You could consider making him autopatrolled. Schwede66 02:46, 4 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi! The user seems to be uploading photos that are not compatible with Commons so I'd hesitate with making him autopatrolled. Example: File:Ericentrus_rubrus_(5).jpg - it's CC-BY-NC. Podzemnik (talk) 06:07, 4 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good to have that one resolved (closed as 'kept'). Were there any other photos with dodgy-looking licenses? Schwede66 10:44, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

dotaz na správce WC[edit]

Ahoj, mám dotaz: je možné zablokovat uploadera, pokud trvale systematicky nahráná soubory a nezařazuje je do kategorií? A rovněž nereaguje na jakákoliv upozornění na uživatelské stránce. Mám konkrétně na mysli příspěvky uživatele Mar26Mon14. Předem děkuji za názor. Gampe (talk) 20:39, 12 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Podzemnik (talk) 04:43, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Díky za odpověď. Gampe (talk) 06:08, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

Christchurch Wikipedia Meetups[edit]

banner for Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large showing four Christchurch scenes

Kia ora! For the first half of 2024 I'm the Aotearoa Wikipedian-at-Large, based in Christchurch and funded by a grant from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. As part of the project I'm running regular meetups in Tūranga where local Wikipedians can meet, chat, help each other out and collaborate on projects. I'll also be organising edit-a-thons, wikiblitzes, and training for new editors. The goal is to grow the editor community in Christchurch and convince local institutions that Wikipedia is worth taking seriously.

We're having an initlal coffee in Foundation Cafe on Sunday 18 February to talk about what Christchurch Wikipedians might like to do; come along if you're free, or drop me a line at mike@rove.wiki if you have ideas or suggestions.

  • Initial meetup: Sunday 18 February, 10:00–12:00, Foundation Cafe, Tūranga

We'll be holding a Christchurch meetup every 4 weeks, modelled on the successful Wellington monthly meetups that have been a big part of growing the Wikimedia community in Wellington and New Zealand. These will be both a coffee chat and a chance for collaborative work in the library's 4th floor workspace. The first two will be:

  • Sunday 17 March, 10:00–12:00, Foundation Cafe, Tūranga (Event page)
  • Sunday 14 April, 10:00–12:00, Foundation Cafe, Tūranga (Event page)

You can keep track of upcoming events at the Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large Event page, see monthly reports at This Month In GLAM (e.g. January 2024), and join the monthly Aotearoa online meetup. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk)
