First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, DmitTrix!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Undo administrative descissions[edit]

This is not OK. I made an adminstrative descission. I'm elected to do such descissions. My descissions can be not correct. Nobody is correct. But never ever you have the right to undo such a descission. This means anarchy and no project in the world of such kind can live if everybody does what he/she want. You could talk to me. You could talk to an other Admin. You could ask on Admin sites here on Commons. All would be fine. But you made the only thing, that's completely not OK! Please don't do it again. Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Hello, Marcus! Sorry, I may have been unaware of Commons practices; it was not clear to me that it was an administrative action (after all, admins also do regular edits; not any action by an admin is an administrative action). I'll be more careful in the future. Have a nice day! DmitTrix (talk) 07:37, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tagging copyvios[edit]

Hi, When tagging copyright violations, please inform the uploader. This is best done using the gagdet. See in your preferences. Regards, Yann (talk) 18:17, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Categories[edit]

Hello DmitTrix,

Thank you for helping in categorize Georgia related files. However please don't forget add another when you removing a category. For example File:Borjomi 002.jpg. When you remove Category:Kura, Borjomi please add Category:Rivers of Georgia, so if it is not Kura river then it is another river of Georgia. -- Geagea (talk) 21:59, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Got it, no problem. DmitTrix (talk) 22:08, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Warning sign
This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Android Nougat screenshot 20161213-112705.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

(You've re-uploaded the original revision.) 2001:2003:54FA:2F79:0:0:0:1 05:37, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I'm OK with deleting the file. When re-uploading the original, I just wanted to prevent over-writing the original by different content (not just higher quality or something). If the original file was/is a copyvio, it should be deleted. Best regards, DmitTrix (talk) 05:57, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tomb ascribed to Xerxes I.jpg[edit]

Hi DmitTrix, if you want the whole category to be renamed (all the files) please do it by request or ask a filemover that has a better understanding in the english language than I have. (although it was once my main language, now it is dutch). All files on Wikipedia have to be removed aswell, so it's to much risk for me to do this. Thnx and good luck. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 12:32, 14 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Oodaaq Island, 2003.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Removing descriptions[edit]

Hi DmitTrix, can you please explain me why you removed the description on File:Koppelpoort Amersfoort Cropped.jpg? Thanks, Multichill (talk) 21:16, 11 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Multichill: Hi! I thought it's better to avoid duplication, and keep the description in one place – on the original image's page. Thus, there would be no need to monitor the two files' descriptions, and actively keep them in sync. But if you prefer the old way, please feel free to undo (or partially undo) my edit. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

has source code, yes; therefore it is categorized to Valid SVG created with MATLAB code. This SVG image category is a subcategory of Images with Matlab source code. Such overcategorizing is not bad, but also not necessary. -- sarang사랑 08:19, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Oh, my understanding was that "Images with Matlab source code" means that the source code is provided somewhere along the image. A "Valid SVG created with MATLAB code" does not necessarily provides the code that was used to generate it, so I'm not sure any one of these categories is a strict superset of the other. Harmonizing categories is forbidden; Criterion #4 is dedicated only for sets (one subject, one day, one author), one photo divided into many parts (Thames 1/100; Thames 2/100, etc.), Wikisource's books or for templates (BSicon and others). Remember: „Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set.” In such a case you can use Criterion #2 (meaningless name) or #3 (error, mistake). Wieralee (talk) 20:21, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I've checked the photos in this category and all of categorized ones were taken in winter, in addition some are covered with the ice not snow, that's why I've moved the whole category, to not move all the photos. Now, when the photos are in Category:Betula pendula in winter I cannot decide if any of these trees is covered with snow, or rather with other kind of winter cover (ice, hoarfrost…). Maybe you have a better eye. Cheers Nova (talk) 17:03, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Even if all photos currently in the category are taken in winter, it doesn't mean someone won't later add a photo taken in another season. It would be better to stick to the meaning of the category name, and not include an entire category in another one when the latter is not a strict superset of the former. If some or all of the photos currently in the "in  snow" category also fit the "in winter" category, better to put the photos into both.
As of snow vs ice vs other, it would be perfectly fine to pick all the images that can't be said for sure to have snow (and not "other"), and remove these images from the category. I'll take a look, but you're more than welcome to do the same.
Cheers! DmitTrix (talk) 17:17, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • P.S.: this one, for example, is definitely in snow (all the surroundings are covered with snow), even if on the tree itself is ice (can't be judged for sure from the pic).
And this one clearly doesn't depict any snow, so I'd keep it in "in winter" but not in "in snow". DmitTrix (talk) 17:25, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sort[edit]

Is it not better to use { {DEFAULTSORT:HMS Leopard (ship, 1790)} } for handling sort in general? Broichmore (talk) 08:52, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I guess you meant something like "Leopard (ship, 1790)" – without "HMS" (because it doesn't make sense to define a sorting key that matches the page title exactly). It could be an option, but consider other pages in Category:Ships named Leopard: for example, there is Category:Leopard (submarine, 1916) – to me, it wouldn't make sense to sort it as "Leopard (submarine, 1916)‎", because "submarine" will come after all "ship"s in Category:Ships named Leopard (including newer ones). My intention was to sort them all by build year, so the best option IMHO would be to have only name and year in the sorting key (as in "Leopard, 1790" that I used).
On the other hand, in other categories that HMS Leopard (ship, 1790) (or other Leopard ships) are in, it may not be appropriate to omit "ship" from the search key. I didn't check all categories of all these ships, so I didn't want to make this sorting key global.
