When to Use Multicast Traffic Concepts
Multicast communications in the networking world is a one-to-many or a many-to-many communications method. It is different in design compared to other network communication methods where network traffic is routed only to one specific host.
The one-to-many communication methods that multicast can utilize are preferable in some use cases. For instance, if an organization needs to distribute a video feed for some reason, multicast communication methods can make this possible. Multicast communication methods can also be used for things like file sharing in a federated manner.
Unfortunately, multicast communications can also cause issues. For example, if an application is not configured properly, it can accidentally flood a network with data and cause a denial-of-service attack. Due to this, network administrators will need to fully understand how multicast traffic concepts work and when and why to use them.
