Is RAID a Viable Backup Solution?
RAID is a technology that can be utilized to either increase performance or redundancy of storage. By utilizing multiple storage drives, RAID arrays can be configured to split read / write instructions between drives (with the benefit of increasing performance), or it can make a mirror copy of data between drives (with the benefit of data redundancy).
This is the reason why RAID is incorrectly utilized as a backup in IT environments. Some IT personnel assume that because a mirror copy of data is made between multiple drives that their data is safe. This couldn't be further from the truth, though. RAID is meant as a tool to increase redundancy and reduce system downtime because of hardware failures.
Due to that mirror copy of data, if a storage drive has a problem, a RAID array can easily switch to the secondary drive in real-time without a system experiencing any issues. Likewise, this gives IT personnel a chance to fix that RAID array without bringing down the system and causing it to be unavailable.
Raid arrays do not keep historical or immutable copies of data, though. Raid arrays are still susceptible to data loss and attacks like crypto malware. This is the reason why a RAID array should never be considered a backup. They only helps to reduce downtime and not recover from catastrophic failure.
