What is the Difference Between an IP Address and a MAC Address?
An IP address is one that is assigned to a device by a network provider, either on a static or dynamic basis, for the purposes of uniquely identifying it during a network connection. It is implemented in the network layer of a TCP/IP (or OSI) model. Originally, IP addresses were 32-bit numbers (IPv4), but because of the growth of the Internet, they were expanded to 128-bit (IPv6).
A MAC address, on the other hand, is one that uniquely identifies an NIC (network interface controller), and is assigned by the manufacturer of the device. It is implemented in the data-link layer of a TCP/IP (or OSI) model. MAC addresses are either a 48-bit number or a 64-bit one.
You can find both the IP address and MAC address of a device through issuing the "ipconfig /all" command. This will list the IP address under "IPv4 Address" and "IPv6 Address" and the MAC address under "Physical Address."
