Fundamental Cryptography Explained FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What is cryptography and what is it used for?

Cryptography is a collection of methods for securing communication in a way that prevents unauthorized access to it. In a modern sense, cryptography usually involves passing information through some complicated mathematical algorithm that makes it incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't know the algorithm that locked it. This incomprehensible data then gets sent to the recipient with confidence that even if someone intercepted the message, they couldn't understand its contents.

Who should take a course on the fundamentals of cryptography?

First of all, anyone who plans on earning the CompTIA certifications Security+, CySA+, CASP+, or PenTest+ should plan on taking this course – it provides a foundation of understanding that will be necessary for grasping the advanced topics found in those certifications. Second, anyone who wants to expand their career into the technical side of cybersecurity. This course helps you understand how the tools and mechanisms of cybersecurity actually work.

What are the different types of cryptography?

In modern, electronic cryptography, there are two main types of cryptography: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric cryptography relies on a single shared key which you could imagine like a traditional lock and key. Asymmetric cryptography is a type of cryptography that relies on a pair of keys: public and private. This is a more versatile and robust form of security, where a public key encrypts data, and a private (secret) key decrypts it.

Is this basic cryptography course associated with any certifications?

Yes, this course was developed to help prepare learners for CompTIA's security-based certifications: Security+, CySA+, CASP+, and PenTest+. This course won't prepare you for those CompTIA certifications in their entirety, but it does cover a theoretical understanding of cryptographic principles and techniques that are fundamental to each of them. It can also be useful in preparing for intermediate cybersecurity certifications from companies like Fortinet, Palo Alto and ISC2.

Can you take this fundamental cryptography course with no previous experience?

Yes, you can take this fundamental cryptography explainer course with no previous cybersecurity or cryptologic experience, but it may not be suitable for people with no IT, technical or mathematical background whatsoever. This assumes a level of familiarity with concepts like PKIs, protocols, algorithms and other implementations of IT technology. This is an intermediate-level course designed to help IT professionals deepen their existing knowledge and specialize their careers.
